{"id":8575,"date":"2025-04-07T15:06:24","date_gmt":"2025-04-07T15:06:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/?p=8575"},"modified":"2025-04-09T06:52:14","modified_gmt":"2025-04-09T06:52:14","slug":"comet-swan25f-20250407","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/comet-swan25f-20250407\/","title":{"rendered":"Comet SWAN25F"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The SWAN Imaging system has found a new comet.<br \/>\nIt has not been assigned an official designation yet, so currently known as SWAN25F.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Has now been officially named as C\/2025 F2 (SWAN). 09\/04\/2025.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s bright enough to be seen in the early morning sky before dawn in the northern part of The Square of Pegasus.<\/p>\n<p>The comet is currently about 9th magnitude and brightening.<\/p>\n<p>It has a very interesting tail, about two and a half degrees long, and has a nice structure. It will need at least binoculars or a small telescope to spot it.<br \/>\nAny detail will best be revealed in photographs.<\/p>\n<p>The maps below show the comet&#8217;s position at 4am (UT) over the next few weeks.<br \/>\nI have added the Orbital Elements at the bottom of this page if you want to add the comet to your planetarium program.<\/p>\n<p>From my location, it will reach about 15 degrees above the horizon in the eastern morning sky before it gets light.<br \/>\nThis did give me a small window of opportunity to catch it on the 8th of April just above our neighbour&#8217;s house.<br \/>\nAfter it cleared the trees I managed to take 6 useful subs before the brightening dawn sky got too bright.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8588 alignnone\" src=\"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408-778x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Image annotated\" width=\"296\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408-778x1024.jpg 778w, https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408-228x300.jpg 228w, https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408-768x1011.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408-1167x1536.jpg 1167w, https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408-159x210.jpg 159w, https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408-600x790.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/SWAN25F-20250408.jpg 1519w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 296px) 100vw, 296px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you want to do the same, you&#8217;ve got to be quick, as it won&#8217;t be visible to us for long.<\/p>\n<p>The comet moves into Andromeda in mid-April, curving around to Triangulum, where we&#8217;ll be starting to lose it in the morning twilight.<\/p>\n<p>By the end of the month, it will approach Taurus, passing the Pleiades Star Cluster on May 3rd. However, we won&#8217;t be able to see this as they will both be too close to the Sun to be seen.<br \/>\nOnce it passes The Sun, the comet will only be observable from the southern
