{"id":6496,"date":"2021-11-30T10:43:56","date_gmt":"2021-11-30T10:43:56","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/?p=6496"},"modified":"2021-12-01T17:15:27","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T17:15:27","slug":"leonard-passes-m3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/leonard-passes-m3\/","title":{"rendered":"Comet Leonard Passes Globular Cluster M3."},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As Comet C\/2021 A1 (Leonard) continues to brighten (Fingers Crossed!) it is now starting to get lower in the morning eastern sky.<\/p>\n<p>The map below shows the path it will take in the sky, passing north of the bright star Arcturus on the 6th of December.<br \/>\n(All maps produced using Sky Safari).<\/p>\n<p>Wider angle maps to help find the comet over the next couple of weeks have been posted here:<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/path-leonard-dec2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/path-leonard-dec2021<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/Sky-Diary\/2021\/Dec\/Leonard-Path.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/Sky-Diary\/2021\/Dec\/Leonard-Path.png\" width=\"905\" height=\"433\" \/><\/a>\n<p>The comet passed by the Whale &amp; Hockey Stick Galaxies on the 25th of November as can be seen in my image below taken that morning.<\/p>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/Sky-Diary\/2021\/Dec\/Comet-Leonard-Composite-Annotated-20211125-Web.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" src=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/Sky-Diary\/2021\/Dec\/Comet-Leonard-Composite-Annotated-20211125-Web.png\" width=\"335\" height=\"501\" \/><\/a>\n<p>But the show doesn&#8217;t stop there.<\/p>\n<p>Comet Leonard will pass right across the front of the bright globular cluster Messier 3 on the morning of the 3rd of December, which will make for a\u00a0great observing and imaging opportunity.<\/p>\n<p>We will have a few opportunities to observe the comet, close to the cluster from the morning of the 2nd until the 4th.<\/p>\n<p>On the morning of the 2nd of December at 02:00h UT, the comet will be located to the west of the cluster.<br \/>\nThis should make a nice image for those who can obtain a fairly wide angle view.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/Sky-Diary\/2021\/Dec\/Leonard-20211202-02h.png\" width=\"1767\" height=\"845\" \/>\n<p>The next morning (4th December), at 02:00h UT, the head of the comet will be butted up right against the cluster.<br \/>\nThe comets extended coma should surround the clusters stars.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/Sky-Diary\/2021\/Dec\/Leonard-20211203-02h.png\" width=\"1767\" height=\"845\" \/>\n<p>The comet will be moving eastwards across the front of the cluster.<\/p>\n<p>By 06:00h UT, a little before the sky starts to brighten in the oncoming dawn, the comet&#8217;s bright nucleus should have cleared the cluster.<\/p>\n\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/Sky-Diary\/2021\/Dec\/Leonard-20211203-06h.png\" width=\"1767\" height=\"845\" \/>\n<p>The next morning at 02:00h UT, the comet will have moved a bit further away, but the tail should still be fairly close to the cluster, making for a great view or another amazing image.<\/p>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/Sky-Diary\/2021\/Dec\/Leonard-20211204-02h.png\" width=\"1767\" height=\"845\" \/>\n<p>The comet will then move further down, getting lower in the sky each morning.<br \/>\nIt will definitely be worthwhile setting your alarm and keeping an eye on the weather and get out and keep and eye out on what the comet is doing.<\/p>\n<p>Wider angle maps to help find the comet over the next couple of weeks have been posted here:<br \/>\n<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/path-leonard-dec2021\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/path-leonard-dec2021<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Comets are always so unpredictable, and constantly surprise us, and I&#8217;m guessing Comet C\/2021 A1 (Leonard) will be no different.<\/p>\n<p>Have fun.<\/p>\n<p>Dave<\/p>\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Comet C\/2021 A1 (Leonard) continues to brighten (Fingers Crossed!) it is now starting to get lower in the morning eastern sky.
