{"id":1877,"date":"2018-11-08T14:30:50","date_gmt":"2018-11-08T14:30:50","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/?p=1877"},"modified":"2018-12-10T14:01:48","modified_gmt":"2018-12-10T14:01:48","slug":"comet38p","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/comet38p\/","title":{"rendered":"Comet 38P &#8211; Stephan-Oterma"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Comet 38P \u2013 Stephan-Oterma<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.star-gazing.co.uk\/WebPage\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/11\/Comet38P.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #ffffff;\"><strong>Click here to download a printable pdf version of this page.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>This period comet was discovered in 1867, by two observers in Marseilles Observatory.<\/p>\n<p>It orbits The Sun in a 38 year orbit, moving out beyond the orbit of Uranus at Aphelion, perihelion at about the same distance from The Sun as Mars.<\/p>\n<p>This comet reaches perihelion early this month, and will pass about 0.8 Astronomical Units (~74,000,000 miles) from Earth, reaching peak brightness around the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> of November.<\/p>\n<p>The comet is currently (8<sup>th<\/sup> November 2018) about +10<sup>th<\/sup> magnitude but brightening slowly.<\/p>\n<p>It could reach a maximum brightness of +9.5 on the 23<sup>rd<\/sup> of November.<\/p>\n<p>The comet is moving in a wide arc just below Gemini, heading north-eastwards towards Lynx by the end of the year.
